"HUMILITY ... being willing to be anywhere if God wants us to be there, being willing to do anything if God wants us to be doing it, glad to be silent rather than speak proudly or disparagingly, satisfied to be forgotten if to be remembered will feed our pride, glad to help others achieve success instead of ourselves, showing a spirit hushed with reverence of God’s greatness and His care."

"Thus will God accomplish His great purpose. Sin and death will have been abolished. Death, the final enemy, will have finished its dark work and will be removed from the face of the earth. The earth will be peopled by all-glorious and immortal saints. Then will be fulfilled in entirety the prayer of the Lord: “Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10). Or, as it is put in one of the Psalms: “O Lord our Lord, How excellent is thy name in all the earth!” (Psalm 8:1,9)."

"Many people thronged and pressed upon Jesus, yet they felt no surge of power, and he felt no virtue leave him. The crowds are with him still, acclaiming him, pressing him on every side. Yet for many there is no contact and therefore no cure. But from time to time one with deep faith in his power comes infinitely wondering, and stooping, touches the hem of his garment, and knows. And in that same instant his Master knows also. That man or woman goes forward with the blessing of peace and joy which only the Lord can give."

"Looking back at the scenes that took place in Gethsemane, and reflecting on them in deep sincerity, we can enter into the feelings expressed by elders and living ones, and angels numbering ten thousand times ten thousands and thousands of thousands, as they sang, "Worthy is the Lamb that hath been slain, to receive the power, and riches, and wisdom, and might, and honour, and glory, and blessing", to which every created thing responded, "Unto him that sitteth on the throne, and unto the Lamb, be the blessing, and the honour, and the glory, and the dominion, for ever and ever."

"Tracing through the writings of Paul the allusions to the risen Christ becomes a study of his mind. At the centre of all his thought is that one fact which he knew in his own experience: the fact which had blinded him physically while it illumined him spiritually: the fact which had changed him from a proud Pharisee to a humble Apostle: the fact of the living Christ, seen and heard on the road to Damascus. All his thinking radiates from that centre. It is the starting point of his reasoning, not only on the fundamentals of life and death, reconciliation, law and grace; but of his counsel on the day by day walk before God; on the “fruit of the spirit” made manifest in all the relationships of human life."

"It is not naturally easy to take the lowly place. Pride may allow us to do it if our 'humility' is sure to be noticed, but if not, others should realise how humble we are!

It is interesting that the one word "courteous" in the New Testament may be translated "humble-minded" (1 Peter 3:8). Pride is the enemy of true courtesy. Love is not puffed up (1 Corinthians 13:4) but how hard some of us find it to avoid this inflationary danger. There is every encouragement for us in Peter’s first letter, where the apostle tells us that "God resists the proud, and gives grace to the humble" (1 Peter 5:5). God always seeks to abase those who exalt themselves but to those who do abase themselves He gives grace, that they may thus become more truly humble. "Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time" (1 Peter 5:6)."

"The foundation upon which John builds is the fact that “God is love”. This can be said of no other! A person may be described as lovely or loveable but only of God can it be said that “He is love”. Love is an inseparable part of His being; it is seen in all His ways. It is the very basis of His great work of salvation and because of it He gave His only begotten Son to save those who would believe in him. Therefore John can write, “He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.” And he can state the same lesson positively, “Everyone that loveth is born of God and knoweth God”; and repeat it again a few verses later, “If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us” (see 1 John 4)."

"Faith in God is not just assurance that God will allow bright patches of light to break the dark paths, but that the whole world is alight in His light! It is not that we take courage to look at the good and try to forget the tragedy—but to know that every part of every experience, is WITH GOD AND GOD IS IN IT!"

"Many sons are brought to glory. Those “in Christ” will receive, with him, the kingdom prepared for them “from the foundation of the world” (Matthew 25:34). They too were in God’s mind when he declared his purpose on the sixth day. They are “chosen in him before the foundation of the world” (Ephesians 1:4); or in the language of Revelation, their names are written “in the book of life from the foundation of the world” (Revelation 17:8). Christ, the saints and the kingdom have all been in the plan from the beginning. They have all pre-existed in the mind of God."

"We cannot – and would not if we could – borrow the methods of the evangelical campaigns. We must often feel that the message preached is so inadequate and misleading as not to be the Gospel. But we can be reminded that only the Gospel can bring men to life, or life to men. Not the exposure of error, though that may be necessary; not the display of learning, though learning may have its uses; not even the exposition of prophecy, though prophecy is a vital witness to the truth: but 'good news of God' (Romans 1:1) – that is the essential of all our preaching."

"God promises to bring His children through trial, suffering and tribulation, and to do abundantly for them above all that they ask or think. Let us trust Him implicity and He will help us in our weaknesses and lovingly correct us in our errors. He will, in short, "cause all things to work for the good of those who love him, who are called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28)."

"The Psalmist (Psalm 46:1) declared that "God is our refuge". He continues with a description of some of the Lord’s many mighty works on behalf of His city. He will "help, and that right early".

The margin tells us that the Hebrew for this phrase actually reads, "when the morning appeareth". We are reminded that God’s day begins with the darkness and ends in the light, for "the evening and the morning were the first day" (Genesis 1:5, 6 etc.). How we long for the rising of "the sun of righteousness ... with healing in his wings" (Malachi 4:2)."

"Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." (Romans 5:1)

"When we pray for the peace of Jerusalem we all must realise that true peace will not materialise in the Holy Land as a result of man’s negotiations. True harmony will only ever be possible when Jesus reigns as King from the city of peace. When Jesus returns (a daily possibility) he will bring peace to the world ... at present we need to practise the quality of peace in our lives. Jesus said, "Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God" (Matthew 5:9) ... So then let us follow Jesus, the example and source of our peace."

"In all your ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct your paths." (Proverbs 3:6)

"Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care on him; for he cares for you" (1 Peter 5:6-7). Let us gird ourselves with humility, as our Master girded himself with the napkin of a servant: let us wear this garment of humility which is our Master’s livery, the sign that we are his servants. In this we will find happiness, for Jesus said, "If you know these things, happy are you if you do them" (John 13:17)."

"In the steadfastness of Jesus, who "set his face steadfastly to go up to Jerusalem", we see the true continuance of one who "for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame". In his resurrection we see the assurance which God hath given to all men that His intentions will be completed. And knowing that this resurrection demands from us the association with the work of Jesus which it is sure to reward, we are bidden by the Apostle take note that Christ is risen indeed, and become the firstfruits of them that slept, so that we can with a good heart and a sure confidence "be steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord."

"... The Lord sees us as we really are. He knows if we are carefully guarding the deposit committed to us, if we are labouring for him to the utmost of our powers, if we are enduring patiently and bearing up for his name’s sake. There may be times in our lives when we feel that the difficulties we face are such that we just cannot carry on. Then is the time to consider him who for us endured from sinners such hostility against himself (Hebrews 12:3) and realise that neither our problems nor our weaknesses are sufficient cause for us to give up. Thus Paul was “afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted but not forsaken; struck down but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9). So we, remembering that we are in the hand of the One from whom none can pluck us, not merely endure but bear up for his name’s sake."

"The motive of our preaching is God’s motive in this great plan of reconciliation – is Christ’s motive in giving himself – a love that is higher, nobler, purer than anything that men and women experience naturally. Such was the love of God and of Christ for wayward humanity. Is that our attitude to those without?"

"A Church of Disciples is an Assembly of Learners; and a Church of Christian Disciples, is an assembly of persons who believe the things of the Kingdom of God, and of the Name of the Lord Jesus, and, thus believing, have been immersed into Christ and patiently continue in the faith and well doing of their vocation, reading, marking, learning, and inwardly digesting all things revealed in the scriptures of truth. Such were the Disciples first called Christians at Antioch. These Christian Disciples shone as lights in the world, holding forth the World of Life."

"... for us in these last days, there is a greater need than ever to draw together in a closer family and unity of sharing, to be alive to our responsibilities, and to the true basis of our fellowship—a living relationship with God through His son Jesus Christ. It is imperative that we continue steadfastly to practise peacemaking and preserve unity, for we are seeking eternal fellowship in that great day when the Almighty God will achieve that perfect unity of which our assembling is only a shadow, when the divine family will then be united in the perfection of immortality. May we be among those who will merit the fulfilment of these wonderful words: "Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb". (Revelation 19:9)."

"The LORD listens to the conversation of those who fear Him as they enjoy fellowship together in talking of their relationship to Him and their understanding of His word. It is a wonderful and special fellowship.  For such God has written a book of remembrance, that is, the book of life which He will open on the  resurrection day so that he can welcome all those whose names are written therein into the Kingdom of His Son."

"... if the Lord can look upon our failures, and see them merely as blemishes upon hearts which beat with his, and know that there is nothing upon earth which we desire above him; then he will be able to say of us at all our Lord’s Suppers until he come, that we are among them who continue with him in all his temptations. And when he comes, he will be able to repeat to us the remainder of the blessing: “I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me, that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom” (Luke 22:29-30)."

"In our own lives we all owe a good deal to one or more friends, whose influence may, indeed, have been stronger than we realize. We may have been unaware of its presence, but as we grow, we shall often realize that in some subtle way our association with our friends has effected a change within us, in our outlook and our behaviour. The influence may have been so marked that we have found ourselves beginning to think our friend’s thoughts, accepting his standards, and embracing his sympathies. Was not this the situation between Jesus and his disciples? Many an occasion revealed how Jesus steadily, patiently, sympathetically moulded the varied and sometimes rather rough material in his care, that they should be able to cope with the great work and testing times that lay before them. Paul speaks of a similar process: “We all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the spirit of the Lord” (2 Corinthians 3:18)."

"Living in this world of human thinking, we ourselves are inevitably threatened; we can easily absorb its attitude, perhaps without realising it, and become careless of the honour due to the God we worship. We need constantly to remind ourselves that the conduct of our lives depends wholly on our attitude to God and His service. We need to honour God and to seek to obey Him in doing His will. And in all creation we shall find only one source to guide us in this vital aim in life—not the prevailing religious fashion, but the Word of God itself."
