Pride may allow us to do it if our 'humility' is sure to be noticed, but if not, others should realise how humble we are! It is interesting that the one word "courteous" in the New Testament may be translated "humble-minded" (1 Peter 3:8). Pride is the enemy of true courtesy. Love is not puffed up (1 Corinthians 13:4) but how hard some of us find it to avoid this inflationary danger. There is every encouragement for us in Peter’s first letter, where the apostle tells us that "God resists the proud, and gives grace to the humble" (1 Peter 5:5). God always seeks to abase those who exalt themselves but to those who do abase themselves He gives grace, that they may thus become more truly humble.
