"God has work for us to do. He desires to use us in the fulfilment of his redemptive purpose. We are not to live for our own sake. "For the love of Christ constrains us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: And that he died for all, that they which live should not from now on live to themselves, but to him which died for them, and rose again." (2 Corinthians 5:1-15). What are our beliefs worth if they are not teaching us truthfulness and unselfishness, and a generosity beyond the world’s? How easy is the thought, in certain moods, of the loveliest most unselfish devotion. How hard is the doing of the thought, in the face of a load of unlovely difficulties."

"If faith is constituted by, and terminates upon, the truth of Jesus, the life of faith continues in obedience to the truth. It was the truth of the Gospel (Galatians 2:5) that was at stake in the churches of Galatia when Paul penned his epistle. His reproofs and expostulations take many forms, and one of them is this: "You did run well; who did hinder you that you should not obey the truth?"  (Galatians 5:7) ... In a word, it is the truth of the Gospel, dwelling richly in us in all wisdom and spiritual understanding, that insures the truthfulness of our practical life; sincerity, honesty, integrity are formed in us by the truth."

"When the words come from God there is every reason for placing them before everything else in life. In the Bible God speaks to us: not vaguely, generally, impersonally but directly and with the deliberate intent of getting through to our hearts. It is a word in your ear and designed for your heart. Jesus tells us that we can close the doors of our ears and the word will not force an entrance; or we can invite it inside where it will demonstrate to the heart the infallibility and holiness of God by showing those qualities in His word."

"... God reveals Himself through promises He is known through His words, and those words are truth. It is therefore scripturally correct to speak of the body of knowledge concerning God and His promises as “The Truth”, and since truth is not only to be known but to be done it is also “The Way”, a course of life leading to the “making perfect” when the promises are fulfilled."

"Promises are prophecy of a particular kind. They will be fulfilled as surely as every other prophecy of God has been realised at its proper time. Moreover, since Jesus Christ is the basis of salvation and we are dependent upon him, God gave more promises and prophecies about Jesus than about anything or anyone else throughout history. This was done in order to provide assurance for us and to put beyond doubt our hope in the promise of everlasting life. Christ, shortly after his resurrection from the dead, demonstrated for the benefit of his apostles prophecies taken from all parts of the Old Testament concerning himself. The Apostles used these illustrations as part of their evidence when they preached the gospel to Jews and Gentiles."

"... If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you shall say to this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible to you." (Matthew 17:20). These words of Christ did not necessarily mean that disciples would be able literally to remove a mountain from its place. What purpose would be accomplished in doing such a masterful job? But the Lord meant that even a tiny fragment of faith, the size of the tiniest seed, could overcome obstacles which may seem like mountains. Some obstacles, quite often the ones of our own making, do indeed seem to be the size of mountains. But by patient thought and sincere prayer for guidance, they can disappear as though they had never been."

"Let us mark that zeal and fervour are not necessarily showy and demonstrative. The most unobtrusive brother or sister may be full of righteous zeal for the Lord and very possessive (jealous) for the Truth. The quietest whisper may be made with great enthusiasm. Is it not sometimes the quiet portrayal of spiritual zeal which is the most telling and perhaps the most exhortatory?"

"Jesus is worthy to receive glory, honour and power; and is also an example for us. He was great as Son of God, but was also obedient as a son. He is higher in rank than any other man, yet lowly as a servant with a duty to perform. He will be worshipped by angels who will surrender to him their office of providential guidance of human matters, yet he himself ministered to men. He has been acclaimed "a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek", yet he offered himself. He has a royal title, and he wore a crown of thorns. All these things illustrate that twofold relationship expressed in his words: "My Father" and "My God."

"In more or less degree, we are preaching all the time. I think we are apt to over-emphasize the effect of our words, and to under-estimate the effect of our example. We do not all set out deliberately to train ourselves as preachers, but surely we do all set out to strive to follow Christ. That way of life carries with it, for every brother and sister, certain responsibilities we cannot and must not avoid: to let men see something in us that shall give glory to God. We are not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ: we cannot be. It is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth. This saving truth, this inestimable treasure, has been committed to our trust. Then let us preach it. We cannot, we must not, hide it."

"The peace on earth we look for is an inner peace of mind to be found if we are true to our high calling. The apostle Paul gives us an assurance of the “Peace of God, which passes all understanding ” (Philippians 4:7). He says, “Those things, which you have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.” Granted the peace of mind we find in Jesus, our manifestation of goodwill in all walks of life can be a great ambassador for the truth. “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16)."

"... the story of the Divine remembrance of the saints goes on with the reassuring message that the names of all the saints he bears engraven on his heart. Not the least among the saints need be anxious about his part, for those characters, remain; the constant care and sympathetic love still operate towards those who reciprocate that remembrance."

"In the face of such definite expressions of the purpose of the Almighty, the errors and speculations of men concerning the future, both of themselves and of the earth, appear “but a vain show”. Behind them there is no assurance greater than human opinion. Behind the divine purpose is infinite assurance.

"Men must depend for their guidance in life on the word of authority which is the word of God: and if that proposition cuts across all modern views of man—social, scientific, philosophical, religious—then so it must do; anything else is sophistry and delusion. If God made man for His own ends and is leading to those ends, then God only can be the source of conduct which will accord with His ends, and His Kingdom will be the embodiment of His righteousness."

"... for just as at the beginning of creation the Almighty proposed to evoke order out of chaos, which he did, so now, when the earth is utterly chaotic, the Almighty proposes to evoke out of it the Kingdom of God, "new heavens and a new earth, in which dwells righteousness" (2 Peter 3:13). And we remember Christ acceptably when we look upon him as a pattern—the Sun of the new heavens, the "Sun of righteousness," (Malachi 4:2) to whose model we must be conformed, if we would shine therein. "They that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament, and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever." (Daniel 12:3)."

"We are walking in the light, seeing and knowing where we are going and what we are doing. A man living in the country where there are no street lights will carry a lamp or lantern with him so that he may see where he is going. Although he has a light with him he does not see the whole path towards home, because the lantern only gives him light sufficient to walk step by step. We remember the words of the Psalmist: "Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path" (Psalm 119:105), and so it is with us. Christ is our light; he only is the Light of God to the world. Spiritually we make one step and then another."

"Faith and Hope are both prospective and will one day be superfluous, the copious spring of Love will never fail. Deriving its waters from the Fount of all Love, the very source of all being, it flows from everlasting to everlasting. It is "a well of water springing up into everlasting life" (John 4:14). It permeates creation, and while all God’s creatures drink of it in measure (for all receive good from the Father), the sons of God are conscious of a greater dispensation: "Behold, what manner of love the Father has bestowed upon us, that we should be called the children of God" (1 John 3:1)."

"The first chapters of Genesis present us with a picture of a garden—a garden that was defiled by the sinfulness of man. The last book of the Bible reproduces that picture but with a difference. In the garden there portrayed, there will be nothing that defiles, nothing to give offence, nothing that maketh a lie."

"... joy survives the depths of suffering, for it brings the gift of courage to overcome adversity by rendering ill-fortune of small account by comparison with the greatness of God’s limitless love. "For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen, for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal" (2 Corinthians 4:17,18)."

"Jesus was born a babe and nourished in nature’s way. He grew in wisdom as he grew in stature. Then when the time came for him to be manifested to Israel, he was revealed as the Son of God so completely fulfilling all righteousness that in him the Father was well pleased. He came not to do his own will but the will of the One who sent him; he could of himself accomplish nothing. The words that he spake were the words of the Father, the works were performed by the power of that Holy Spirit that had called him from the womb. It was “the power of the Highest,” his Father and our Father, his God and our God. Jesus is the only begotten Son of God who can reveal the Father to men and call repentant sinners to come to God through him."

"If the Kingdom is the substance of the Gospel it is also its crown. At this point all the aspects of divine truth are brought to a focus: the knowledge of God as Creator who never abandons His creation; the knowledge of Christ as saviour and Lord; the knowledge of man as created for God’s pleasure; the knowledge of life as triumphing over death for those who are Christ’s; and the knowledge of evil as vanishing like darkness before the light of God’s glory when finally His tabernacle shall be with men. Our joy now is in the hope of this Gospel of the Kingdom in all the manifold light that God’s revelation throws upon it."

"However broad our views of life and its associations, if our main interests centre around anything less noble than Jesus Christ, our discipleship will fail of its best. Loyal allegiance to the Son of God is the one link that should unite us, the one strong bond that will give strength and meaning to lasting friendships and lead us to "adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things" (Titus 2:10). May it be our aim so to testify and minister that we may be good stewards of God’s manifold grace, ambassadors through whom God Himself may entreat men and women to be reconciled to Him."

"In "receiving us to Himself" God has decisively separated us from the Gentiles and from the world. The very phrases which describe the called of God are indicative of this separation: "the believer": one who adheres to, one who trusts in, one who relies on, God; "the saint": one who is set apart, separate, holy. Thus, being "received unto God" we work with Him in a "fellowship" which is a communion and a partnership of interest, so that His purpose may be realized in us, and in the earth."
