"The grace of God, whether we think of it as the grace whereby we are called or the grace whereby when called we are kept in the way, is the love of God in action. It was this which made Paul what he was and which enabled him to do what he did (1 Corinthians 15:10). The same grace is offered to us through the work of the risen Lord, a “grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16). In thinking of that grace and availing ourselves of it, we have so often to try to preserve a balance ... It is precisely this balance which the New Testament helps us to preserve with its doctrine of fellowship with God, a fellowship in which God works in and through us and we work in and through Him. So we become fellow workers with God (1 Corinthians 13:9), and Paul exhorts the Corinthians (2 Corinthians 6:1) as workers together with Christ not to receive the grace of God in vain. God’s work does not render ours unnecessary nor can we dispense with His, but there is a fellowship which expresses itself in working together that the body of Christ and the temple of God may be built up."

"We ... look for a “day”; the day when “this same Jesus shall so come in like manner” as the disciples saw him go; the day when “the Lord shall go forth ... and his feet shall stand ... upon the mount of Olives ...”; the day when men “shall see the Son of Man coming in power and great glory”; and when “the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise” (Acts 1; Zechariah 14; Luke 21; 1 Thessalonians 4)."

"The day will surely come when “all shall know the Lord”. In that day, “the Gentiles shall come to thy light (the light shed by spiritual Israel), and kings to the brightness of thy rising”. But because the light has already come to us, we must cast off the works of darkness and walk as in the day, wearing the armour of light."

"The demonstration of mighty power in Egypt, the writing of the Law, the casting out of demons, even the creation of the heavens themselves, is the work of the finger of God, but they are only the visible signs of a purpose with man, created to express the mind of God and to have dominion over the works of His hands, a purpose seen to perfection in Christ but complete only in all those who are made complete in him. "And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace."

"(Matthew 23:8-12) ... The greatness to be sought after is that of selfless service, as Jesus himself goes on to declare. "He that is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself (to serve) shall be exalted." How searchingly this test must scrutinize each conscience! Instead of desiring office—to serve; to love the brethren with a pure heart fervently, instead of "loving the pre-eminence"; not looking for reward, or esteem from men; nor counting the cost in terms of personal convenience; but doing all things for the "love of Christ", which, says Paul, "constraineth me".

"... what marks the end of the year in God’s calendar? And, by the same token, what marks the end of the year in our calendar as members of the spiritual nation of Israel? In Jesus Christ, God has not appointed to us “times and seasons” that we should religiously observe. We have the word of the Spirit through Paul to know that. But because the law was a schoolmaster, given by God, to bring us to Christ, it can teach us many things about him through the significant demarcations of the year—according to that law. And not only so, but these time-points can be expanded on a larger time scale—the larger calendar of events in God’s outworking purpose that really do concern us, in our own times."
