"Nineteen centuries have come and gone and we can say with emphasis that all the books ever written, all the words ever spoken, all the sermons ever preached, all combined, have not affected the life of man upon earth as the words of this lowly man of Galilee."

"Our affairs are not too trifling for Him, for He has a vital interest in all His saints, those devoted to His worship. In the trials that inevitably come upon us from time to time, we must trust to the wisdom of our God, mistrusting our own personal desires, knowing that "all things" will ultimately work for our good, if we are among those that honour His Name. Consider the understanding of Paul, as he reviewed God’s acts in the call of "the Jew first" and then of the Gentiles through centuries of troubled history, and exclaimed:

"O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God!" (Romans 11:33, R.V.).

If we can share the apostle’s unshakeable faith in the wisdom of our God, we shall find comfort and the strength to "be content with such things as we have" and to "endure to the end"."

"Fruit, naturally speaking, is the visible evidence and expression of a tree’s good health. The tree that comes to fruit has done what it was meant to do. It has done what it was designed by God to do. It has perfectly fulfilled its function. From which we can tell how best to understand spiritual fruit. Spiritual fruit is the visible evidence and expression of a believer’s good spiritual health. Likewise, the believer who comes to spiritual fruit has done what he or she was meant to do—what he or she was designed by God to do."

"... our love is full of promise; it is a preparation for the future: "For God will save Zion, and will build the cities of Judah; that they may dwell there, and have it in possession. The seed also of his servants shall inherit it; and they that love his name shall dwell therein" (Psalm 69:35-36). Most of us have not seen Zion, and none of us has seen the Zion that shall be, but we love her gates and her walls, and we long to sing the songs of salvation in her streets. None of us has seen Him who has caused us to love Him, but we are assured that: "The Lord is righteous: he loveth righteousness: the upright shall behold his face" (Psalm 11:7, R.V.)."

"True Christian hope has a reason for its existence. Our confidence is not vague and uncertain, it is vested in real and carefully ordered divine promises, it is given its final glorious assurance in a risen and active Christ. Our hope grows stronger and brighter as we pursue our journey, it will become a dominating power ennobling the character, purifying the life, bringing us daily nearer to God. The prospect of meeting the Lord who has loved us fills our hearts with joy; the glory of his coming Kingdom with its universal and eternal blessings is a source of growing wonder and yearning."

"The love of God is love of all that is most excellent. It is not only goodness, but for our highest good: for God is the author of all the good that we ever enjoy, and He bestows upon us the capacity to enjoy that which is good. To love God is, as the Lord Jesus says, a "first and great commandment." The love of God always supposes an entire obedience to the will of God, prompted not by fear but by love. This love is a longing after God; a desire to have Him near us. We shall open our hearts to Him in prayer, in aspirations of gratitude, in effusion of thanksgiving, devotions and praise. If love beget love, this marvellous love of God for us will fix His love in our hearts and imprint His will in our affections. Whenever the truth which the Lord Jesus taught is rightly understood and believed, the love of God will be the predominant feeling of the heart."

"A consideration of the heavens will continue to invite the Psalmist’s question, "What is man, that thou art mindful of him?" (Psalm 8:4) and to underline the prophet’s declaration that the "nations are as but the small dust of the balance" (Isaiah 40:15); but the amazing truth is that God is mindful of man, and that the nations of men are fulfilling a design foreknown before the foundation of the world."

"The secular occupations of Jesus and Paul beautifully fill out this picture: Jesus, the “artisan” in wood and stone and metal, built the framework and foundation of the spiritual tabernacle—the “centre pole” of his work being the cross of wood erected at Golgotha. Afterward, Paul—the New Testament “Aholiab”—was responsible for the “stitching together” of the skins and fabrics (the individual ecclesias?) into whole coverings, to overlay the wooden framework: the “carpenter” and the “tentmaker” working together, according to the pattern of the more perfect tabernacle!"

"The more humble a man is, the readier to acknowledge his unworthiness, the brighter shines forth the image of God within him. To walk humbly is in itself a virtue, but to walk humbly with God is to live a life of constant communion with the highest which raises a man to heavenly heights of endeavour and achievement. The corn bends its head when full of ripe grain; the more we ripen to excellence the humbler we shall become. Without humility no soul ever turns to God. And without humility religious progress is impossible. Pride is the destruction of the principle of progress; it whispers to us continually that we are already all that could be desired, or it points our attention to high positions and ambitious efforts beyond the scope of other men."

"We are nearing the great crisis of our lives. The sun will, for a time, be hid from view; but the end will come quickly. Let us not be fearful, neither let us be afraid. It is indeed "a day of clouds and thick darkness". But just behind the turmoil the sun is waiting to break forth in all his splendour. When he shines, the sorrows of the night will be for ever chased away, and "we shall rise with gladness in his sight". "Though the vision tarry, wait for it".

"Our priest is sympathetic and understanding; he has himself been tempted and tried. He has felt weariness and known travail of soul. He has found refreshment in the river of life and knows its sustaining power. So the Psalmist said it would be: “He shall drink of the brook in the way: therefore he shall lift up the head”. So he was helped; so he overcame; and in this way with his help we too may be among those who overcome."

"He will come with the book, the book of remembrance of those who feared the Lord and thought upon His name. Then shall we see the holiness and infallibility of the word of God in the Word of God. Then shall we know what manner of man it was who told us these words."

"Faith in God involves two things, says the apostle, as in his brief, pregnant way he treats of matters revealed in the Old Testament; belief in the existence of God, and that God has a purpose with man. Faith touches the unseen, and shews itself in the confidence that God is. It touches also things hoped for, and therefore matters of promise. In this its relationship to the Word of God is seen; for things promised are known in and by the Word of God, and faith comes by hearing the Word of God."

"The Creator’s thought for man is in His word. It says that man was made in the image of God. The powers that make man unique were given him to enable him to give glory to his Creator. These powers, the capacity to love, trust, assess and respond, which place man at the summit of creation, enable him to be true to his own law. Upon the tulip, the law of the tulip. Upon the eagle, the law of the eagle. Upon man, the law of mankind. When men answer the law of mankind they do that which is divinely natural and become like God. This was the issue in the beginning—man was faced with two possibilities, either to become like gods knowing good and evil or to obey God and eventually become Godlike."

"To fear the Lord means that all other fears are reduced to nothing, that He and He alone will dominate our thinking and fashion our decisions: that He will be seen as the Creator and Sustainer of all and the only hope of future existence. We shall stand in awe before Him, even before the wonder of His love."

"There are many forms of knowledge in the world, but only one is of final value. Knowledge of God has finality in two senses. First, all human knowledge is relative. The further men go in investigating the world by scientific methods, the clearer does it become that science by its very nature must always be changing; it cannot claim finality without ceasing to be science. In some degree the same is true of all branches of human learning. But when the Eternal has revealed Himself to men, there, and there alone, we can come to the knowledge of what is final and absolute, even when it is a knowledge in which we must be ever growing."

"Centuries passed until in the fullness of time God sent forth His son. Again, the time came when he should depart from this earth. And again he speaks of a long journey to a far country, all of which would require more time. But he gave a clue concerning his return; it might be "at evening, at midnight, at cock-crowing, or in the morning", and if we review the centuries since his ascension we can see how time has been running out."

"There is no better course of treatment where doubts about the Word of God exist than to apply oneself to a detailed study of it. A detached student may fear that disharmony might result that could destroy what little faith he had. On the contrary, truth has nothing to fear. 'Thy Word is truth.' Because the Word is inspired by God it will stand microscopic examination, providing it is not approached in a sceptical spirit ... God never yet turned away any servant of the Word who came to it with reverence and godly fear."

"Jesus always meant what he said; he never wasted words. Always, he must be put first. We are not being asked to love our families less; we are asked to love him more ... Loyalty to the family above Christ means death; loyalty to Christ above the family means life everlasting."

"Man, made in God’s image, instructed by God, reflects God’s light. He turns from God’s commandments and he passes from light to shadow, and at last for the most part to darkness, in which he walks alienated from the life of God. But the light still shines ... Christ was light, reflecting the Father in fulness of beauty and splendour, and the Gospel of his glory sheds his light abroad ... With the proclamation of such a gospel John could say, 'the darkness is passing away, and the true light already shineth.' The light is not merely a form of doctrine; it is 'a way' in which to walk."

"A little boy was counting the number of times the malfunctioning clock chimed and much to his amazement, the clock struck thirteen times. He quickly ran to his mother exclaiming, 'Mother, it’s later than it has ever been before!’ Although the clock may be incorrect, the little boy’s statement is truer than he realizes. It is later than it has ever been before. Paul put it quite plainly when he said, 'now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.' ... we are nearer to the return of our Lord than we have ever been before”

"Salvation depends upon the assimilation of the mind to the divine ideas, principles, and affections, exhibited in the Scriptures. This process commences with a belief of the gospel, but it is by no means completed thereby; it takes a lifetime for its scope, and untiring diligence for its accomplishment."

"The fellowship of our Saviour’s suffering is a wonderful privilege open to all who become vitally responsive to His Father’s will. God needs and seeks men and women after His own heart, not having ends of their own to serve, not having errands of their own to run, but whose whole joy it is to yield to Him, embraced by His great redemptive purpose: "Neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God"  (Acts 20:24)."

"How much time, in this era of the five-day week, the pastime and the leisure pursuit, do we devote to the contemplation of the things of God and His service? How keenly do we appreciate that in diligent daily work, in the custody of the eyes, the guarding of the lips, the putting off of anger, wrath and malice and the putting on of charity, we are ceasing continually from our own works, like the Lord of the sabbath, to do the works of the Lord of the covenant?"

"Jesus was full of grace in every way. We are told that his hearers "wondered at the gracious words that proceeded out of his mouth." In this respect he was like the Father that sent him, for God is the God of all grace, the Gracious God. His grace will yet be revealed in connection with the House of God to be built as the house of prayer for all nations; and for this David prays, when he says: "One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple" (Psalm 27:4). Moses appears to equate Beauty and Glory in Psalm 90: "Let thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy glory unto their children; and let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us."
