"The sea, with all its moods, has many spiritual lessons to teach us. One day it is diamond-showered by the sun and its waves seem hardly to have the energy to break on the shore. Suddenly a surge and swell moves the water, as if some monster of the deep had turned over in its sleep. Winds tear up huge waves which, curling their crests, smash down on shore or craft. The moon’s gravitational influence causes the tides, and earthquakes cause devastating tidal waves. But for all its turmoil the sea can go so far, and no farther (Job 38:8-11). It is God alone who is in over-riding control, and even the winds and waves obey Him (Jeremiah 5:22)."

"Mount Zion, the hill of the Lord, has ever been characterized by acts of signal generosity. There Abraham was willing to sacrifice his son, his only son, Isaac, whom he loved. There David laid out fabulous sums of silver and gold to purchase and endow the site of a temple “exceeding magnifical”. There a poor obscure woman gave “all the living that she had”. There God gave His “unspeakable gift”—“his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life”. There also God will “provide the blessing, even life for evermore”. And to-day! who will ascend into the hill of the Lord?"

"All things are open to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do. We have always known this, but much of the time we lose consciousness of it, as David did when the lust of his eyes overcame him. It is not, however, for want of counsel that we forget. Jesus was particularly careful to remind us of it constantly. For, in providing for the wellbeing of his people upon the earth while he should be away, he gave them no such laws as Israel had observed (or ignored) in times past. He founded no hierarchy to administer outward laws; he placed no confidence in the judgments upon righteousness made by men, but made every believer directly responsible to God."

"We might think it captivating that one of the shortest phrases in the Scriptures, "Rejoice evermore", is also one of the most significant (1 Thessalonians 5:16). It is an uplifting, rallying call to the brethren and sisters at Thessalonica to press on in faith to the reward reserved for those who have not turned aside from the way of righteousness: "For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Thessalonians 5:9)."
