Resource Manager
01 November 2015 "In Christ we see the full revelation of God’s word, the perfect expression of His active truth. Not only does Christ speak truth; he is truth; he is the Word which with unfailing power is accomplishing God’s ends; and so in the last vision, when he is seen going forth with the heavenly armies to subdue all the world to righteousness, he is called “Faithful and True” and his name is called “The Word of God”. How, then, does Christ himself regard the earlier writings? The final answer, as of so much else in Jesus, is the Cross; because it was written in Moses, the Psalms, and the Prophets, it was binding upon him to suffer; because he came to do the will of God, he took upon himself all that was prescribed to him in the roll of the Book, and was obedient even to death, and that the agonizing and shameful death of the cross. We have also his many express declarations of the authority of Scripture; and one such saying must be carefully considered in a study of the Sermon on the Mount." - L.G. Traditions of men are always in danger of blunting the Word of God. The church of both Old and New Covenants has been tempted in her weaker moments to apostasy, that is, to depart entirely from the faith she professes. But in her stronger moments she has always had to face a subtler danger, the temptation to syncretism. She has been tempted to add to her revealed faith ideas and practices which are man-made. The human and the divine are given equal status, and eventually the revelation is distorted beyond recognition." - John W. The phrase “the word of God” has become so familiar to us that it has lost some of the awe-inspiring quality that it had in Old and New Testament times. Yet with our knowledge of the frightening vastness of the Universe, and the staggering powers that are being revealed, even in this sophisticated cynical age, we ought to be awed and uplifted by the knowledge that we have received something of the Eternal Wisdom, the incomparable love, and the unsearchable (to modern man) purposes of the Almighty Father Himself." - John MarshallPortrait of the Saint

"In the beginning was the word" (John 1:1) is true in a variety of ways and it was certainly true for the first man in his relationship to God. The principle is still true: first revelation, then responsibility. "The word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him ..." (John 12:48). "Have you not read that which was spoken to you by God?" (Matthew 22:31) is still the challenge. The message which greets them is one that countless multitudes have yearned to hear: "Behold, the bridegroom comes; go you out to meet him!" The virgins arise, and the lamps are again picked up. Some shine with light immediately, others fail to cast even a glimmer. Imagine the scene! A multitude, incorporating the responsible throughout all the ages from Adam’s day onward, standing once again among the living! All will be fully aware of the purpose of their recall. They will realise that Christ has come to set up the Kingdom of God upon earth. They will be aware too, that the judgement precedes the era of divine rule. What joy! what sorrow! what serenity of mind! what panic! what elation, yet consternation! At some moment in the days ahead (it may be in the days immediately ahead) the Master will suddenly return, and we, together with those from the resurrection, will be summoned to appear before him." - Wm. It is natural and healthy to like encouragement and be glad in the knowledge that we have done something well; it is spiritual and far healthier to be unconcerned with the praise of men, and rejoice that God has chosen us for His good work. With such a spirit we shall know how to dislike and discard the misguided flattery of kindly-intentioned friends, while we shall be glad at the sober approval and encouragement of an incorruptible helper. It would seem that the frame of mind shown by opposition incapacitates for appreciation of the wondrous things of God’s law. The Lord quoted and expounded the types and brought out their inner meaning. There can be no inner meaning to books produced according to the critical method. The Lord found "Thus it is written" sufficient to settle what he ought to do: but the critics of the Bible are left without any authority to settle any point of conduct. For if a man can determine what must be accepted as authoritative, how can that, which has acquired authority for him only from his own judgment, be regarded as having the impelling force of "Thus saith the Lord"?" - John CarterThe Oracles of God

In the course of the journey he meets three men and has a conversation with each. It is the third man who deserves attention: "And another also said, Lord, I will follow you; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house" (Luke 9:61). Obviously the crucial expression is "Lord, I will follow you, but ...". The Lord Jesus believed that once the man was back in the house, amid the family, faced with opposition to his proposed emigration from home, he would lose his resolution and have second thoughts. All this is encapsulated in the words "looking back". Looking back means turning back. In the day of Jesus, ploughing had to be done in the winter, and there was always a temptation to leave it and get indoors. "The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing" (Proverbs 20:4). The master lesson is that ploughing calls for endurance and, by inference, Jesus is saying, so does discipleship." - Dennis GillettWords and Weights

It therefore follows that "though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not love, it profiteth me nothing" (1 Corinthians 13:3). But the man who makes God’s will his own, will do the works as though it were by nature: he will not count that he has done this and that; his right hand will scarcely know what his left hand does. He will have become an instrument through which God’s will is fulfilled because through love his own will is absorbed in God’s." - L.G. Sargent What Does the Lord Require? Jesus spoke of it in an impressive way when he said to his disciples, "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you; not as the world giveth give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither be fearful". It is a feeling that should result from an implicit trust in the fatherhood of God and the salvation that is to come from an association with Jesus Christ. It is a fruit to be appreciated in these days of perplexity, when men’s hearts are full of forebodings.
