"When we arise every morning, let us look to the heavens; if when we do so our hearts are overwhelmed with longing for the Lord, let us be so conscious of him all through the day, and in hymns and psalms meditate during our working hours. Should we feel no joy at the thought of him, let us go down on our knees and pray earnestly for that which is lacking. Seek wisdom and forgiveness; and love, joy and happiness in all circumstances will be found."

"Balance in discipleship is, no doubt, a fruit of the spirit, inasmuch as it is a quality of the mind of Christ. The Body of Christ will be a healthier body if each of its members strives to cultivate spiritual balance. Let each of us be on guard against that deceptive pride that may convince us that we have permanently mastered this important element in the disciple’s character. When taking the emblems of bread and wine in remembrance of the Lord’s sacrifice, we measure our own attempts to capture this important characteristic against his perfect example."

"In the age to come, when the elect stand at last before the Lamb, then praises will sound to God in and throughout eternity: "Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen" (Revelation 7:12)."

"Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?" (1 Corinthians 1:20). Let those of us then who have been, or are engaged, in acquiring the learning of this world constantly realise its limitations and not allow ourselves to be seduced by it. The rewards and prizes it confers are all perishable. There is only one enduring form of knowledge, and its acquisition should be our main objective in life. That is the knowledge of God and His ways. The prophet’s words are often quoted; they need to be taken to heart by each one of us: "Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches; but let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me ..." (Jeremiah 9:23,24)."

"Friendship is a two-way affair: "He that hath (or would have) friends must show himself friendly." Our fellowship with God is founded on love. God has already shown His love to us—has reached out the hand of fellowship to us, as it were, by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. "In this was manifested the love of God toward us, in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us." And in this supreme act of love Jesus himself participated to the fullest extent, for "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."
