Chapter 6

1 See, for example, Hebrews 9:15 and 1 Corinthians 11:25.

2 A table of daily Bible readings for beginners, Getting to Know the Bible, will help you here. Obtainable free on request from the publishers of this book.

Chapter 7

1 ‘Gehenna fire’ (hell fire) is mentioned only in the New Testament. In the Old Testament the word ‘hell’ is never connected with fire. It is found in the King James Version of the Old Testament, where it is the translation of a Hebrew word, Sheol, which is actually a poetical name for the grave. Modern translators usually leave the word untranslated (as Sheol) or translate it, ‘the grave’. See, for example, Isaiah 14:15-20. The Greek word for Sheol is Hades, which occurs in a few places in the New Testament. It is used, for example, of the grave that Jesus was buried in; see Acts 2:25-31.

2 There are one or two Bible passages where the word ‘soul’ at first sight appears to refer to an immortal spirit. But closer examination soon reveals that this is not really what is meant, and that these isolated passages do not disagree with the other 500 or so passages where ‘soul’ is always related to our present mortal existence.

3 Strictly speaking the International Distress Signal, SOS, does not stand for anything - it just happens to be a very distinctive pattern of dots and dashes in Morse. But the popular interpretation, ‘Save our souls’, illustrates the real meaning of the word soul.

Chapter 8

1 For a detailed explanation see my pamphlet, The Problem of Suffering, obtainable from the publishers of this book.

2 From the Appendix of his Historical Essays and Studies.

3 Revelation 20:1-6 tells us that this state of affairs will last for a thousand years, but since many of the numbers in the Book of Revelation are symbolic it is not certain whether this is a literal thousand-year period or not.

4 So 1 Corinthians 15:28 indicates.

Chapter 9

1 Bertrand Russell, Power (George Alien & Unwin, London, 1938) ch. 7.

2 G. C. Field, Pacifism and Conscientious Objection (University Press, Cambridge, 1945) ch. 3, p. 78.

3 This can be inferred from several New Testament passages, notably Acts 20:7 and 1 Corinthians 16:2.

4 Greek, Christō adelphoi.

5 To see that this is so, compare the promise of Luke 24:49 – ‘power from on high’ - with its restatement in Acts 1:8-‘power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you’. Also, see Luke 1:35, where ‘the Holy Spirit’ is paralleled with ‘the power of the Most High’.

Chapter 10

1 Luke 14:27-33.

BACK COVER

World news is usually bad news nowadays. But unlike today’s newspapers, Great News for the World makes exciting and reassuring reading.

Gently but surely its scientist author leads his readers towards a satisfying faith. He gives solid reasons for believing that God really exists - and that He cares deeply about the sorry state of our world. That is why Jesus Christ will return to the earth soon, to rescue it from the threat of disaster.

Other great doctrines of Christianity are also explained simply in this convincing book. Why did Jesus have to be crucified? Is there any life after death? What does it mean to be a Christian? The Bible comes alive as questions like this are answered from its pages.
