"In God’s son ... is deposited the security of peace; eventually, for the whole world. And when this is realised the temporary aspect of the Divine character will cease. Truth and righteousness will have triumphed over that antagonism which has arisen like storm clouds upon the horizon of life, and spread like a thick mantle over the ocean of human experience.

And God will be all, and in all."

- J.E. Jarvis
The Love of God (1931)

"In the New Testament the Lord Jesus claims to be the true shepherd, not driving but leading the flock in the eastern manner. His sheep know his voice, and follow with confidence. They will not be beguiled by the voice of a stranger. Even in the darkness and with many foreign sounds filling the air, the voice of the true shepherd can be heard by those who know how to listen. He was willing to lay down his life for the sheep. He passed through the dark valley, but having been saved from death because of his righteousness, he is able to save to the uttermost those who follow him."

"The Psalmist says: "They that know your name will put their trust in you" (Psalm 9:10). The reason for trust is in what we know of God. The warrant of faith is the Divine character. Because God is righteous He cannot do wrong. Because He is love He can only act lovingly. Unbelief will try to deny this—but have none of it. In spite of the anguish and the trial, we believe that God is trustworthy. He loves to be trusted. In the final analysis that is what He asks. Not that we explain Him, defend Him or vindicate Him—but that we trust Him.

For God and man trust is the most precious thing to possess: the quality that makes life possible in every sphere of existence, high and low. Trust is a mighty thing. It is a vital part of the genius of discipleship."

"The liberty we enjoy is not a liberty to please ourselves, but a liberty to please God; to please Him, though, not by a slavish adherence to a certain rigid code of laws (sometimes one we have drawn up ourselves), but by a willing, whole-hearted devotion to His will, a devotion so deep down within us that His law becomes, as it were, part of our very beings."

"Who am I that I should have been brought into the company of those who hope to share in the great redemption made possible by the decision of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane? The question may well lead us to reflect, and reflect again, on the love of God in giving His only begotten Son, and on that of Jesus in laying down his life for his sheep."

- W.H. Boulton
Reflections (1956)
