"There are great virtues at the summit of the Cross which have great splendour, such as wisdom, justice, zeal, liberality and the like, and everyone wishes to have them. But we ought to cherish the small virtues which grow at the foot of the Cross, for they are watered by the blood of the Son of God. These virtues are humility, patience, sweet temper, kindness, helpfulness to our neighbours, graciousness, goodwill, sympathy, readiness to forgive, simplicity and others. These are like the virtues which love the coolness of the shade, which are fed with dew, and which, though they have no brilliancy, cease not to shed fragrance around."

- Francis de Sales (1567-1622)

"There is strength in the word comfort–the comfort and the help and the blessedness of the divine provision for wherein we come short; and, if we have done all that we can, because God is interested, God is working to bring us to His salvation if we will only co-operate with Him."

"Men buy, but do not possess for long. They use the world, or abuse it, but soon pass away from its busy scenes. Its pleasures grow cold; its griefs are but for a season; the flames die down and only ashes are left.

The emblems of our Lord stand for the only truly abiding things, the eternal verities of God. "For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds." Titus 2:11-14"

"Our Lord said: "Be you therefore perfect, even as your Father who is in heaven is perfect" (Matthew 5:48). Imitators we must be. All His works praise Him; so must ours, humble though they be. They must partake of that which is perfect."

"Our hopes for eternal life are premised upon the beseeching words of Jesus, "That they might know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent" (John 17:3). These are words that are constantly in our thoughts, for we can only "know" God and His Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, by loving them with all our heart, and by the daily reading and absorption of His Word; and by putting into practice those principles of truth so clearly set out for us in the Scriptures, those precepts that nurture and give effect to the "fruit of the spirit" "joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance". Our sincere love, understanding and patience must be manifested not only in family and ecclesial life but also in our relations with all those with whom we come into contact. It is by doing this that we come to know "the only true God" and Jesus Christ "whom you have sent", and are able to hold dear the hope of eternal life."
