"Jesus said on one occasion, "I have meat to eat that you know not of." In another way he might have said, "I have water to drink that you know not of." The secret waters of refreshment, which our shepherd has provided, are unfailing and he will lead us to them if we will allow him to do so."

"There were men who took part personally in the drama of the Exodus, who were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; there were men who saw the mighty works of God in Christ’s day and marvelled thereat. Yet were their hearts hardened, and with many of them God was not well-pleased. Let us who are associated with the greater work of God in Christ, the expression of His mind rather than the work of His fingers, "look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal."

"... the whole purpose of Christ’s living and dying was to open up the way to this "eternal salvation" both for himself and for "all them that obey him". This he achieved through prayers and supplications and with strong crying and tears; and this same end, for us and in principle for all men, is the central object of all true Christian praying, to which all other objects of prayer must be related and subordinated: "Your kingdom come, Your will be done in earth, as it is in heaven" (Matthew 6:10)."

"... the Word of God ... is a record not just of what God has done and taught, but of the spirit in which He has done it. It is a prolonged demonstration of His mind in its action and interaction with men; and its true aim is not to stock our minds with facts, nor to convert us overnight by some magical formula, but to influence our development, to transform us so that we may become more like Himself; in short, the aim of the Scriptures is to make us fit for fellowship with God. And this it could never have done if it had been a short and bare recital."

"The eternal purpose of God has been revealed. There was a time when the Ephesians were without Christ, having no hope, and without God in the world. But now, that which God purposed from the foundation of the world has been made known. By the work which has been accomplished in Christ, the saints are made partakers in his glory: his death, his resurrection, his ascension to the right hand of God in the Heavenly Places, are all for them, in him. "I therefore beseech you that you walk worthy of the vocation wherewith you are called, with all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love, endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace." God has done this for us; He is able to do abundantly above all that we ask or think. So high is this gift and this hope, that we can only have one course: to endeavour to walk worthy of it. We cannot deserve it, but we can at least show a proper appreciation. It is clear enough."
