"To every generation the "watchword" gives its warning. It is our turn as we study the divine message; "We ought to give the more earnest heed." The course of the currents flowing about us may be different from theirs, but they are none the less dangerous, carrying us away from "the faith once for all delivered to the saints."

"The light we emit is by no means confined to verbal preaching. "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in Heaven." (Matthew 5:16) The everyday conduct of each member of the ecclesia makes some sort of impression on the populace and the impression we create may either help or hinder our preaching. It all depends on the way we live, on the sorts of people we are."

"The Apostle Paul’s Christianity was of a very practical sort. Scholar and intellectual as he was, he never lost sight of the fact that unless his beliefs affected his daily living, then his religion was vain. How often does he insist that man’s wisdom (so much of it being only in the head) is powerless and of little value when it comes to salvation!"

"The Lord’s exhortation to Thyatira comes down to us over the centuries: Take a firm grip on what you have and keep my works until the end. We believe we are now very near the end of this age and we ought to pay closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it (Hebrews 2:1). We can be seduced from the Faith by the plausible ideas of men, as were some of the Thyatiran believers, and try to find a 'reasonable' compromise with those around us, as some of them did, even if it means the modern equivalent of fornication and eating things sacrificed to idols. Those who keep his works will reject any compromise that would endanger their belief or manner of life, while always remembering that this staunchness must be combined with tact and graciousness in dealing with those in error or the people among whom we live and work. Keeping our Lord’s works to the end will not be achieved by an occasional victory over a major temptation but in the daily overcoming of our weaknesses and the exhibition of his character in our humdrum lives."

"Soon there will be lying at our feet a goodly land, flowing with broad rivers, and green pastures glimmering in eternal sunlight; and a greater than Moses will be there to say: "Come, you blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world" (Matthew 25:34)."
