"As man’s knowledge of the universe extends and deepens, its stupendous character becomes increasingly apparent. The purpose behind this proliferation of heavenly bodies is utterly beyond our understanding. Yet God “determines the number of the stars, he gives to all of them their names. Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure” (Psalm 147:45)."

"Our dwelling in Christ and in God must be of the same kind as their dwelling in us. That we could be “in God” in any physical or personal sense is impossible; but in a spiritual sense, in our understanding of the spiritual quality of God and of Christ, in the giving of our hearts and minds to it, and in our faithful service, there can be developed that “fellowship (common sharing) with the Father and the Son” (1 John 1:3), that “unity of the Spirit” (Ephesians 4:3) which makes us true sons and daughters of God."

"Even in the dreary wilderness, with the “wild beasts”, our Shepherd prepares us a table, as He did for our fathers who came out of Egypt, causing waters to run down like rivers and raining down manna from heaven (Psalm 78:16,24). We must not complain or doubt. We must never ask, as did they, “Can God provide a table in this wilderness?” (Psalm 78:19). He can, and He does! Here before us on this table are the emblems of a body dedicated and blood poured out. Here as sheep we feed on the pasture provided by the Good Shepherd. And even while the beasts of prey circle menacingly, and the shadows lengthen, we are fed in hope, the words echoing in our ears:

"Fear not, little flock, it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom."

What comfort there is, what encouragement, in these words! They keep in our minds the beautiful vision of our destination. The cloud has been taken up from the tabernacle. Let us arise! Let us pack our bags and gather our children about us. Let us renew our journey through the wilderness."

"If we think of the Scriptures as men’s words, or even partly men’s words, then we will not receive it as we should. By believing it to be the Word of God we will implicitly accept it as true and therefore we will trust it and the Lord who caused it to be written. That confidence will provide the basis for us rightly to divide the Word. For example, we will be able to study words and follow themes through Scripture because we believe that no matter how many years separate the recording of its parts the Author of Scripture is the same and His message is consistent. Repetition of words and phrases will be understood to be deliberate quotation drawing together passages of Scripture for close comparison, and not mere coincidence. The Author of Scripture cannot but recall perfectly how His words were previously used and must therefore be intending us to connect the passages when He uses them again."

"The hope of harvest is not selfish. It is a multiplied blessing for all. It is surcharged with God’s love for men in need. It is the realisation of the Divine purpose, to make man and be manifested among them and in them--men and women co-operating with and revealing God; the grace of God outshining in the world. This is the harvest; this is the reaping. The point to be stressed is that since the harvest is fraught with love and compassion, so is the well-doing, or it should be."
