"The sorrows, sufferings and shame of our Saviour borne in the holiest spirit of unresisting love and patient meekness on our behalf should lead us to think how different our tempers are from his, and how far short we come of his truly perfect pattern. If we feel like complaining, let us make the complaints against ourselves, against that spirit of pride which will not readily bend to the yoke of Christ. “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way of escape, that ye may be able to bear it” (1 Corinthians 10:13). And when all is said and done, “our light affliction”, which is but for a moment, “worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory” (2 Corinthians 4:18)."

"We are told that a "humble person is so in his principles and in his conduct," and that "humility should form part of the character as it is opposed to arrogance and assumption; it is most consistent with the fallibility of our nature." "Lowliness should form part of our temper, as it is opposed to an aspiring and lofty mind; it is most consistent with the temper of the Lord Jesus, who himself was 'meek and lowly of mind.'"

"There is no mystery about "walking in the Spirit." It means simply, obeying God. By remembering Christ, by contemplating his obedience, his perfection, his implicit trust in God, we may become, as he did, "of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord"; and to every enticement with which we may be faced, we shall be able to give an unhesitating reply— "It is written ..."

"Blessed is the man that endures trial: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to them that love him." (James 1:12)"

"Knowledge is power when it speaks truth: and truth must assert itself, not the speaker. Truth consists of the Word of God indwelling richly—to will and to do. Its strength is Christ. The vessel is the weakness through which that strength is made manifest. “When I am weak, then am I strong”: strong, for example, in steadfastness under every difficulty. When one is most aware of native weaknesses, then is one most conscious of the sufficiency of Christ."

"David’s remembrance of God, with all that accompanied and followed it, was the result of an intense thirst after God: and so it must be with us; both factors are necessary, and to speak of either without the other is to argue about words to no profit: a genuine thirst after righteousness must express itself in remembrance, meditation, prayer and praise; and on the other hand prayer, praise, remembrance and meditation have value and meaning only when they are practised in response to that thirst."
