"... The attitude of the apostles is an application of the teaching of Jesus to the conditions of their own day. Their main aim is the same as his: to redeem men from sin, to proclaim salvation in Christ, to encourage faith in God and obedience to His word. They offer no encouragement to the believers to attempt to change the social order of the Roman Empire, either by peaceful persuasion and propaganda or by violent means. Rather they accept the social order as irrelevant. Masters can remain masters and slaves can remain slaves; but both should remember their high calling in Christ and act in their social position, whatever it is, as “becometh saints”. The followers of God were therefore not to be social reformers or revolutionaries, but to be subject to kings, authorities and powers, rendering all the honour due to them by law except when that clashed with the honour due to God and to Christ, so that they might lead quiet and peaceable lives in all godliness and honesty."

"Our love for God is truly tested by our attitude to those about us: “If a man say, I love God, and hates his brother, he is a liar: for he that loves not his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?” (1 John 4:20). The issue of loving God is placed clearly before us and has to be faced with honesty and sincerity of heart, as John insists, declaring, “that he who loves God love his brother also” (1 John 4:21)."

"The blessings of love and forgiveness flow to us through the channel of faith in the message of the Gospel of Christ and by God’s acceptance of us through Jesus. Forgiveness comes to the believer when he personally seeks and asks for it in the way appointed by God. Forgiveness is certain: but it is not automatic. There is forgiveness with God, but it is not bestowed on men without their knowledge and cooperation. Such a thing would be true if redemption were the erasure of a debt, or a substitutionary transaction which had totally removed the necessity for us to seek forgiveness. The Bible approach is much simpler and much more satisfying. Forgiveness comes to the man who believes the Gospel, repents and is baptized in the name of Christ."

"... Being lost in Rabbinical superstition and quibble, they had lost the first essentials of real wisdom, that is “the fear of the Lord,” and what the Lord had written concerning their coming King. Consequently, they “knew not the day of their visitation.” If any king could now say to his subjects: “Come unto me all you that labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest,” we can well imagine that the offer would be gladly accepted. Such is the offer now to all who have the capacity and the honesty to perceive and accept facts.

It was “The King of the Jews” who gave this invitation. The Jews are a reality, and much that was foretold concerning them has become history! They are with us to-day, they are imperishable. In a higher and fuller sense their “King” is imperishable, although withdrawn from the earth until the “set time.” He said to Pilate: “Everyone that is of the truth hears my voice.” What is this “truth”? We cannot alter “truth”; we cannot do anything against it, but we can do much for it. “The truth” was manifested to the world in Jesus Christ, who was rejected by his own countrymen, and who, when he thus spoke, was about to receive his reward."

"... Where one’s inner life in Christ is concerned, there can be no short cut to glory, no royal road to success. Instead there must be the patient, persistent application of a ruthless, devastating, revealing honesty with oneself. And Jesus encourages us with an assurance couched in what would be a platitude if it were not so profoundly true: If your whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle does give you light.” (Luke 11:34)"

"Thought is the most personal thing about us. No other human being is acquainted with our thoughts except in so far as we choose to reveal them. Thought is personal; it is also swift and “leaps like flame”. We may also add that thought is often disordered, undisciplined and undirected. Perhaps it is the hardest thing in the world to control. The Apostle James said that if a man “offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body” (James 3:2). The control of thought is even harder, and in fact we know that we must be satisfied with something less. But it remains true that we must strive to be master of our thought, for unless we can master our thoughts we shall never master ourselves. The extent to which we are successful in this most fundamental of problems will determine the kind of persons we are, for “as he thinks in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7)."
