John goes much further than saying that God loves; he says, God is love. This fact can only be apprehended through knowledge and experience—knowledge of God’s dealings in history, and experience of his love in our lives. God has created the heavens and the earth. He is a righteous Judge. He gave to his people precious promises. He guided them through all their difficulties and succoured them when in danger.
